Long Ago Yukon Speaker
Saturday, February 15th
Dr. Peter C. Dawson, Head of the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Calgary will give the next Long Ago Yukon Skype talk at the Beringia Centre on Saturday, February 15 at 1 p.m. It is entitled There and Back Again: Digitally Capturing Herschel Island Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park and it will document his multi-year project with the Yukon Government to digitally capture heritage features that are at extreme risk.
Herschel Island/Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park is among the most significant heritage sites in the North American Arctic. Archaeological evidence from the Thule people ancestors of the Inuvialuit to Sir John Franklin’s 1826 expedition to late 19th century whalers and Anglican missionaries are presently at great risk due to coastal erosion and flooding caused by storm surges – all of which are the results of climate change.
