Premier Sandy Silver brought arctic communities into the spotlight with Canadian Premiers during the meeting of the Council of the Federation in Saskatoon.

Arctic communities were brought into the spotlight with Canadian Premiers during the Council of the Federation meeting in Saskatoon.

Premier Sandy Silver says using opportunities like this to get Yukon and northern communities the supports they need are valuable.

"To get Yukon's voice on a national scale, a national level, on a western level, on a northern level; it's extremely important. We've seen the results of that through the flexibility of infrastructure funding in the past, and different initiatives. Any chance we get to flex our muscles at these tables, we'll take it."

Silver said all of the premiers agreed on the importance of strengthening Canada’s position in the Arctic, as the impending threat of climate change affects how the world views the arctic.

He says he appreciates the desire by all Premiers to work together towards solutions that benefit all Canadians.

"We're going to disagree as regions on specific endeavours for carbon. What we don't disagree on is the need for every jurisdiction to have a plan when it comes to reducing fossil fuels where we can."

He says discussions about building resilient infrastructure, responsible energy development, and involving northerners in decision making about the North, were all well received by the other Premiers.
