Watson Lake Mayor Charged with Fraud and Forgery

Cheryl O'Brien is set to appear in court on October 6, 2020.

Charges have been laid against 46-year-old Cheryl O'Brien, who is alleged to have been fraudulently depositing business cheques into a personal bank account.

The Mayor of Watson Lake is being charged in a fraud case.

Watson Lake RCMP has laid several charges against the Mayor of Watson Lake, 46-year-old Cheryl O'Brien, who is alleged to have fraudulently deposited business cheques into a personal bank account between May 20th and July 29th, 2020.

Whitehorse RCMP Sergeant Kent Langley says criminal charges have been laid against O'Brien.

"Charges have been laid in this case, with counts of Fraud Over $5000 dollars and Forgery."

A person with knowledge of the incident alleges that O'Brien was confronted about and confessed to embezzling money from the Watson Lake Riding Association.

O'Brien is released on an Appearance Notice for court on October 6th.

RCMP says as the investigation remains active and ongoing, no further information will be released at this time.
