Yukon Government say funding three Adult Day Care programs in Whitehorse isn't responsible

In response to the Helping Hands Adult Daycare being shut down, the Yukon Government say funding three similar Adult Day Care programs in Whitehorse wasn't a responsible use of dollars.

In response to the Helping Hands Adult Daycare being shut down, the Yukon Government say funding three similar Adult Day Care programs in Whitehorse wasn't a responsible use of dollars.

The department's Kendra Black says that's why a 300-thousand dollar contract with Helping Hands Adult Day Care was not renewed.

"the existing providers were able to provide services to those clients so I don't believe shortages of space are an issue. They had the capacity to provide services."

The department says an Adult Daycare provider knew for over a year and was given a definitive time in February they would lose 300-thousand dollars in funding and would have to close.

Black says meetings were held with Helping Hands Adult Daycare and other service providers in the winter of 2018, and notice was given four months ago a short-term client transition contract would expire at the end of June.

"Ultimately this was a decision that balanced client support needs and outcomes while ensuring public funds and resources are used responsibly. It's part of the department's overall efforts to ensure our health and social system is sustainable for the years to come."

Black says two non-profit providers were able to absorb the five clients, and there's no shortage of spaces for such programming for special needs adults.

Helping Hands owner Danny Lewis told the RUSH last week, he was only given a month's notice the funding would be pulled, and his business would have to close after 20 years of operation putting five employees out of work.
