Days before the school year begins, the Elijah Smith School in Whitehorse gets vandalized
WHITEHORSE – Elijah Smith school has been hit by a wave of vandalism as the school year starts.
The damage was the talk of social media Thursday in the Granger and Copper Ridge areas.
Today, the Department of Highways and Public Works acknowledged the damage in a social media post.
“You may have noticed that we have started making a number of improvements to the Elijah Smith Elementary School here in Whitehorse, all of which will improve the building’s energy efficiency,” the post stated.
The department went on to say “unfortunately, the school roof and playground were recently vandalized. Our team has been working quickly to assess the damage and repair the situation before school begins.
“We have been working hard to make sure the vandalism is painted over before the start of the school year,” the department added.
Students attend school for their first day on August 22, 2022.
