Yukoners can provide their input on the new Extended Producer Responsibility Program
YUKON – Public engagement begins today on the Yukon Government’s implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility program in the territory.
By introducing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) throughout the territory, the Yukon Government will hold producers and businesses accountable for the recycling or disposal of their goods and packaging.
According to the territorial government, this move makes recycling more financially viable, keeps more garbage out of landfills, and assists the Yukon in meeting Our Clean Future’s waste diversion and greenhouse gas reduction objectives.
Every province in Canada has this program in place, making the Yukon the first territory to piggy bag on the plan. The territorial government has said that developing consistent extended producer responsibility policies and programs for plastics is a priority identified in the Canada-wide Action Plan on Zero Plastic Waste, which is being implemented by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment.
Yukoners and stakeholders can provide their feedback until January 27, 2023, with the first opportunity for public input being in-person at the Recycling Summit from 4 pm to 7 pm on November 1, 2022. The public can provide feedback at the Kwanlin Dun Cultural Centre.
