The Canadian and Yukon governments have unveiled a new program to conserve the Yukon’s natural resources.
YUKON – The territorial and federal governments have announced a new initiative to protect nature in the Yukon.
Biodiversity meetings continue in Montreal and begin the final few days. On December 14, 2022 a deal between the Yukon Government and the Government of Canada was struck to push on nature preservation and protection efforts in the territory.
The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and the Honourable Nils Clarke, Minister of Environment of Yukon, unveiled the Canada-Yukon Environment Agreement, the territory’s first of its type, to improve nature conservation and protection.\
The Canadian government will contribute a total of $20.6 million to execute the deal and assist safeguard the environment. This would support Indigenous conservation leadership; greater protection of sensitive ecosystems; and recovery activities for threatened species like northern mountain caribou, grizzly bears, and vascular plants, as well as the protection and conservation of additional Yukon land.
The governments of Canada and Yukon will work together with Indigenous peoples and governments to execute and achieve Canada’s first Nature Agreement. The objective is to protect or conserve an additional 6% of Yukon’s enormous wilderness by 2025, bringing the total to 25%.
