The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and the Yukon RCMP are working together to look into a Whitehorse use of force incident
WHITEHORSE – Together, the Yukon RCMP and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team are investigating a use of force incident in Whitehorse.
On April 8, 2023, at around 8:20 p.m., Whitehorse RCMP received a call to help Yukon Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with several allegedly drunk individuals in the city’s downtown core. One of those involved was arrested when police were called to the scene. Police discovered the subject had a wound after making the arrest, so they quickly contacted Yukon EMS once more for an evaluation.
Given the gravity of the situation, the Yukon RCMP promptly informed the Yukon Government Department of Justice, who then contacted ASIRT to look into the occurrence because the victim had been hurt. The purpose of ASIRT is to efficiently, impartially, and objectively look into claims of police wrongdoing and instances involving the police that resulted in significant harm or death to any individual.
The Yukon RCMP’s internal review procedure has been implemented to compile a complete record of what happened during this event, independent of ASIRT’s inquiry. The status of the participating members on-duty status, RCMP policy, police reaction, and training will all be reviewed.
