A $50,000 investment was announced by MP Brendan Hanley to help aid the ongoing studies into active transportation solutions.
WHITEHORSE – The federal government is investing in a study taking a look at safe active transportation in the Yukon’s capital.
On June 9, 2023, Member of Parliament for the Yukon (MP) Brendan Hanley shed light on a $50,000 investment to support community-led studies on active transportation in two of Whitehorse’s neighbourhoods along the Alaska Highway.
The Alaska Highway separates Whitehorse, making it difficult to access services, community recreational facilities, and schools, as well as affecting the movements of citizens of all ages. The Cycling Association of Yukon, Takhini residents, the Hillcrest Community Association, and the Whitehorse Urban Cycling Coalition have all agreed to contribute to an active transportation feasibility study.
This feasibility study will help to guide future choices on how to improve pedestrian safety along the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse. It will investigate the architectural considerations, related costs, and community benefits of constructing active transportation underpasses in two critical places beneath the highway that are safe, convenient, and accessible to persons of all ages and abilities.
The investment will support the planning and engagement activities needed to help expand pathway networks, bike lanes, trails, and pedestrian bridges.
