WHITEHORSE – A new gymnastics facility is set to get constructed in Whitehorse’s Whistle Bend neighbourhood
Member of Parliament for the Yukon Brendan Hanley, and Yukon’s Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn announced on June 29, 2023, that the federal government is investing more than $31.6 million to support the construction of a new gymnastics and climbing facility in Whitehorse.
This funding will be used to develop and build a new gymnastics and climbing facility in Whitehorse’s Whistle Bend district. The much-anticipated new complex will include separate facilities for gymnastics and climbing sports, with a total size of more than 3,000 square meters. The structure will be built to meet the height standards for both sports and will be large enough to hold athletic events.

This new facility will assist promote sports tourism in Whitehorse by attracting more competitive athletes and events, in addition to meeting the strong local demand for recreational areas.
Minister of Community Services Richard Mostyn says the Yukon has always had a flourishing sport community and this will only push it further.
“Yukon has a vibrant sport and recreation community that goes without saying, as a government, we’re always looking for opportunities to help grow and expand the opportunities for Yukoners both young and old. Places like the gymnastics and climbing facility create spaces for people young and old to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle in the territory”
Vice President at Climb Yukon Joti Overduin says the organization has waited for nearly a decade to see this come to life.
“It’s been a long time that people on the board are working towards having a dedicated climbing facility in Yukon well before I ever joined but I also said you know it’s something that we have a lot of patience for”
No timeline has been announced on when the facility will be completed.
