An ATV accident leads to one dead and another with minor injuries in Carcross
CARCROSS – This past weekend, an ATV rider died near Carcross after their vehicle turned over on the South Klondike Highway.
On July 15, 2023, shortly after 5 p.m., Carcross RCMP reported that there was an ATV fatality to the Yukon Coroner’s Service. The tragedy happened at kilometre 103 on the South Klondike Highway.
Long-time Carcross resident, 75-year-old Menno Ken Matthies and his wife Mrs. Matthies were taking a recreational ride along the highway. While driving slowly, the couple tried to ride up a steep embankment and the ATV rolled over.
Mrs. Matthies escaped from under the ATV and attempted to flag down motorists from the highway, however, Mr. Matthies died at the scene.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service will continue to investigate the accident. The service says they are grateful for the Carcross RCMP and members of the public who stopped to try and help.
