Whitehorse, YT – The City of Whitehorse has decided to grant a temporary development permit for Gladiator Metals that will allow mineral exploration within city limits.
This approval comes as some concerned citizens voice concern over the proposal. Last night’s city council meeting saw Skeeter Wright, of the McLean Lake Residents’ Association voice his opposition to the project noting previous mineral exploration projects in the area in the 1960’s.
The area is 29.8 hectares, near Mount Sima and Copper Haul Road, and is designated for industry use in the Official Community Plan and zoned for a combination of Future Planning, Quarries, and Heavy Industrial use.
The permit is valid until November 13th with Gladiator Metals planning to make 16 drill holes in that time.
According to the city, the permit includes conditions including noise mitigation, restrictions on on-site hydrocarbon storage, and a ban on chemical usage. The City also assures that only existing roads will be used and surrounding vegetation will remain unaffected.
The City plans to keep monitoring the project to ensure the company adheres to the set conditions.
