WHITEHORSE, YT – Two people have been sent to hospital for treatment following a serious car crash on the Alaska Highway on the evening of January 8th.
Whitehorse RCMP have confirmed emergency crews were called to a scene on the Alaska Highway near Porter Creek shortly before 930pm Monday evening, where two vehicles were involved in a collision and had caught fire. Emergency crews had closed the section of highway as first responders worked to assess the injuries and extinguish the flames. Both drivers were transported to hospital, and were the lone occupants of their respective vehicles. There’s no word on their current condition.
The Alaska Highway was closed overnight between Wann Road and Centennial Street to allow for icy conditions on the roadway to dissipate. The road was reopened by 5am Tuesday morning.
At this time RCMP can not share information about the cause, but alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
Anyone who witnessed the collision is encouraged to contact the Whitehorse RCMP or Crimestoppers.
