Whitehorse, YT – The territory’s podcasting community shined early this week after three Yukon based podcasts won awards at the 2023 Canadian Podcast Awards which aims to celebrate excellence in Canadian podcasting.
The accolades include the ‘Doctor DC Podcast’ for Outstanding Leisure Series, ‘The Nerdy North’ for Outstanding Indigenous Series and ‘Yukon, North of Ordinary’ for Outstanding Branded Series.
Receiving over 500 podcast submissions, John Leschinski, Chair of the Canadian Podcast Awards, says the awards are a way to celebrate the excellence of Canadian podcasters.
“These podcasts exemplify the wealth of talent we have here in Canada and reflect the unique attitudes, opinions, ideas, values, and creativity of Canadians,” said Leschinski.
The ‘Doctor DC Podcast’ dives deep into the world of DC Comics and has previously received an award for Outstanding Arts Series in 2021 and Outstanding Comedy Series in 2022 and ‘The Nerdy North’s’ two hosts discuss nerd culture ranging from comics to video games.
The ‘Yukon, North of Ordinary’ podcast launched in late 2021 and collaborates with its namesake magazine to share captivating stories about life in the territory.
Karen McColl, the host of the North of Ordinary podcast says that the podcast aimed to fill a gap in the podcast world by showcasing the rich tapestry of stories found in the Yukon.
“I mean, there’s interesting stories everywhere, but in the North, we have some things that they don’t have elsewhere in the country. We have a lot of people who do kind of offbeat things,” said McColl. “I think being able to tell these northern stories, we can share some things that people don’t hear in other podcasts around the country.”
This year, McColl said it was both surprising and exciting to be receiving an award this year and extended her congratulations to the other Yukon winners.
