WHITEHORSE, YT – Members of the Whitehorse Muslim community have organized a ‘Unity Iftar’ for this coming Sunday, March 31st, and you’ve been invited to join them for an evening of feasting and conversation.
During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, many Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset, and the Iftar is the fast breaking evening meal which is often celebrated together as a community feast
Unity Iftar organizer Israr Ahmed explains this event is meant to share that sense of joy and unity with the larger Whitehorse community.
“The whole purpose of breaking the fast in a communal fashion is to share the joy which is inherent in feasting after a day of abstention from food and drink…. so I wanted to share that joy with with all of Whitehorse.” – Israr Ahmed, Unity Iftar organizer
As conflict raging on in Gaza, and instances of islamophobia and Antisemitism on the rise around the globe, Israr says this year Ramadan has been a particularly difficult time for Muslims.
“It’s such a gloomy shadow that has been cast upon this Ramadan. This year I don’t think joy is an appropriate word to use… but nevertheless, this is an opportunity to speak to talk to each other, to let each other know that you’re here united against all forms of hatred.” – Israr Ahmed, Unity Iftar organizer
Israr says he felt obligated to organize this event as a way for Muslims and non-Muslims to stand together in solidarity against hate. The Unity Iftar is meant to provide an opportunity for conversation among community members.
“What better way to do that than to break bread together” – Israr Ahmed, Unity Iftar organizer
The Unity Iftar is free of change and open to all. It will be taking place from 8:45 until 10:00 PM on Sunday, March 31st at the Days Inn Hotel Conference Hall.
