WHITEHORSE, YT – Whitehorse Mayor Laura Cabott has announced that she will not be seeking re-election for another term on City Council, saying the time has come for her to move on from the ‘all-consuming’ role of Mayor and start focusing on other projects.
Reflecting on her 6 years in the Council Chambers, with the past three years in the role of Mayor, Cabott called it an honor and a privilege to serve her community. She adds that she’s very proud of the progress and accomplishments made on a number of issues since she first assumed the role of city councilor in 2018.
Mayor Cabott drew special attention to accomplishments made with regards to housing, particularly the development of a long-term Official Community Plan and master plans for Whitehorse neighborhoods tailor made to support the cities booming population.
The Mayor also hailed significant progress made by lobbying both the Federal and Territorial governments for the much needed funding to support housing and infrastructure projects in the city, and pointed out that regular meetings with First Nations leaders, Federal, and Territorial ministers has paid off.
The City’s continued progress adapting to the Yukon’s changing climate was also considered a success by the Mayor, who notes the effective response of the City as it dealt with unexpected climate related emergencies like fires, floods, landslides, and power outages.
Also a point of pride for Mayor Cabott, the development of a much more robust City Transit system. Mayor Cabott notes that transit ridership levels have never been higher, and the number of transit users continues to rise with each passing month.
