Whitehorse, YT – An evacuation alert has been issued for the Village of Mayo and the surrounding area due to a new out of control wildfire that was detected late Saturday, June 29th.
The Roaring Fork wildfire is north of Minto Lake Road and located 15 km north of Mayo. The wildfire is 100 hectares in size and is receiving a full response from fire crews.
The wildfire prompted the Yukon Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) to issue an evacuation alert for Village of Mayo, First Nation of Na-Cho Nyäk Dun C-6 Subdivision, Keno City, km 28 to 108 on the Silver Trail, Duncan Creek Road and Minto Lake Road. EMO adds that other areas may be affected in the future.
If you are in the affected area you should be prepared to leave within two hours if an evacuation order is called.
In the event of an evacuation the rally point is currently Dawson City and EMO says more details will be released if an evacuation order is given.
When preparing for an evacuation EMO says to locate family members, designate a safe meeting place, gather important things like passports and medication, move livestock or pets to a safe area, arrange transportation and accommodation and look for updates.
There is also a level two fire restriction in place for the Beaver Creek, Haines Junction, Carmacks, Ross River, Dawson, Mayo and Old Crow fire districts.
