Whitehorse, YT – Romi Yu, the owner of Kita Japanese Kitchen and Bar is offering a month’s worth of free milk tea to whoever broke into their boba tea shop, Kita Boba and Snacks, on Wednesday night.
Early in the morning on Thursday, July 18th, Yu received a distressing call from his landlord who informed him that the glass door to his boba tea shop had been smashed. Upon arriving at the scene, Yu found shattered glass strewn across the floor and discovered that the cash register was empty.
Although initially shocked at the break-in at his business Yu decided to stay positive and instead be thankful the perpetrator didn’t leave a big mess.
“They didn’t make a big mess so I didn’t have to spend a whole day cleaning up. So basically, I’m offering the free milk teas to the person who did it to us. I’m trying to be positive,” said Yu. “What else can we do right now?”
In a post on Facebook detailing the incident, the owner even says, “If you need help, please feel free to contact me.”
Kita wasn’t the only business hit that night. Whitehorse RCMP are investigating break-ins at Pickapeppa and Farm and Social which were also done on Wednesday night. Police are also looking into whether the early Thursday morning stealing of two white Ford F-150s from the Capital Towing compound and a break-in at the City of Whitehorse’s compound on Tlingit Street are connected.
After posting about the break-in on Facebook, one person offered to help clean up and another business reached out with lessons they learned from a similar break-in.
“I feel really positive because a lot of people were offering to help. I do feel sad for the other businesses, which have the same situation but I’m being positive,” remarked Yu. “I feel those people’s offers have really saved my day.”
The police investigation is ongoing and they ask that you contact them if you have any information, or dashcam footage or were in the downtown area from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m., particularly between 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. You can reach out to Crimestoppers if you wish to remain anonymous.
