Whitehorse, YT – A level two fire ban has been implemented today due to high fire danger caused by recent hot and dry weather.
Starting today, cooking and warming fires are only allowed in provided fire pits and stoves at commercial and road-accessible campgrounds. All other fire use is suspended.
The restriction comes because further human-caused wildfires could compromise wildfire-fighting efforts.
Fire use in Dawson City and Whitehorse is determined by the municipality and fire use in national parks is decided by Parks Canada.
Parks Canada launched a fire ban across Kluane National Park yesterday banning open fires. Park visitors can still use the permanent fire rings at the Kathleen Lake campground and day-use area.
Barbecues, hibachis and portable gas stoves are still allowed for park visitors but Parks Canada is urging the public to use caution when using stoves or disposing of cigarettes.
Yukon Wildland Fire Management says Yukoners should be aware of activities that can produce sparks or heat.
