WHITEHORSE, YT – In recent weeks, Whitehorse’s wildlife corridor of Chasàn Chùa, also known as McIntyre Creek, has been at the center of a push by a number of organizations to have it designated a protected environmental conservation area.
Now, at 530pm today, November 7th, the Yukon Wildlife Preserve will be releasing a juvenile bald eagle they’ve been caring for back into the wildlands surrounding the creek, which itself is a prime habitat for eagles.
“This place is so important to so many people, to so many animals, and for so many different uses.” – Lindsay Caskenette Yukon Wildlife Preserve’s Manager of Visitor Services
As the Wildlife Preserve’s Manager of Visitor Services , Lindsay Caskenette explains, the young eagle to be released appears to be female and was brought into their care on October 18th, after she was found walking the streets of Dawson City.
While at first glace, the bird didn’t appear to be sick or injured, she was underweight and had difficulty flying, so the staff at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve kept a close eye on her, slowly nursing her back to good health over the past few weeks. Now, Lindsay says, the young one appears eager to go.
‘She’s pretty feisty, she’s got a lot of attitude, and that’s a great sign… She’s gained some weight, she’s flying around so we don’t want to keep her any longer than we need to.’ – Lindsay Caskenette Yukon Wildlife Preserve’s Manager of Visitor Services
The young raptor will be released at 530PM, November 7th from the Gazebo overlooking Chasàn Chùa / McIntyre Creek, which is on the left side of the road about 3.4 kilometers up Fish Lake road.
The release is a public event, and everyone is welcome. There will also be a livestream of the release on the Yukon Wildlife Preserve’s Facebook page.
