Whitehorse, YT – Former Whitehorse City Councillor Ted Laking will no longer be seeking a Conservative Party of Canada nomination and instead aims for a Yukon Party nomination.
Laking says the shift from federal to territorial politics came after hearing Yukoners voice concerns with healthcare, education, affordability and rising crime.
“It became more and more evident to me that the best way for me to give back and serve the community is to be by staying closer to home and supporting the Yukon Party in the Legislative Assembly,” said Laking.
In a press release announcing the decision, Laking adds that his family’s personal experience with the challenges facing Yukoners also factored into the switch.
Laking emphasized the need for a “common-sense territorial government” to replace the current Yukon Liberal government, which he believes has failed to adequately support Yukon families.
Yukon Party Leader Currie Dixon points to Laking’s experience as a Whitehorse City Councillor and President of the Association of Yukon Communities and says he’s excited to see his interest in working with the Yukon Party.
“He’s got a long history here in the Yukon and deep roots in the communities and I think he’s a wonderful candidate and I’m really excited that he wants to run for the Yukon Party,” said Dixon.
Laking is awaiting possible changes to the electoral boundaries before being able to choose a riding where he could be considered as a candidate.
The next territorial election is set for November 3rd, 2025 but could be called sooner.
