WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon RCMP have laid two charges in relation to last year’s fatal home explosion in Whitehorse’s Riverdale neighbourhood.
At 530am, on November 14th, 2023, first responders in Whitehorse had responded to reports of an explosion at a residential property on Bates Crescent. On scene, emergency personnel had found the property destroyed with extensive damage to neighbouring homes. One person in a neighbouring home was killed, while the owner of the home was sent hospital with injuries.
RCMP say following an extensive investigation involving the Yukon Major Crime Unit and multiple agencies from outside the territory, the owner of the home which exploded, Timothy Preston, has now been charged with two counts under the Yukon Gas Burning Devices Act.
Preston had been charged on Thursday, November 7th, with infractions of section 5(1) and 7(a) of the Yukon Gas Burning Devices Act relating to the permitting for the installation or alternation of gas appliances.
He’s due in court on January 7th, 2025.
RCMP say as the matter is currently before the courts they will not be offering further comment.
