WHITEHORSE, YT -A notification issued on December 28th by PricewaterhouseCoopers Inc., the court appointed receiver for the Victoria Gold Corporation, had warned of a possible leak in a newly constructed containment pond at the Eagle Gold Mine. The Pond in question is being used to hold treated water.
According to that notification, irregular volumes had been noticed within the containment pond prompting temporary measures to dilute the pond water and in an attempt to reduce toxicity.
An investigation to determine what caused the volume fluctuations within in the containment pond is now underway.
Meanwhile, environmental monitoring of both ground and surface water, including at Haggart Creek, has been ramped up. Experts are also considering additional options for water treatment to reduce copper levels in the site’s discharged water.
On December 20th, the Yukon Water Board had approved a request for an emergency amendment to the site’s water license, allowing for the discharge of partially treated water from the site.
The Yukon Government says under the amendment, the water discharged will be non-toxic, but will contain higher levels of Copper, particulate solids, and Cyanide than had previously been allowed.
