Whitehorse, YT – Yukon’s Chief Coroner Heather Jones says it’s been a “heartbreaking” holiday season for the territory as the Yukon Coroner’s Service is investigating four deaths that occurred between December 18th and 30th.
On December 18th, a 56-year-old man was found deceased at 405 Alexander, with preliminary autopsy findings indicating toxic illicit drugs as a factor. A 21-year-old woman was also found deceased at 405 Alexander on December 30th with toxic illicit drugs suspected to have contributed to her death.
On December 23rd, a 37-year-old male incarcerated at the Whitehorse Correctional Centre died by suicide. A Coroner’s Inquest will be held, as required by the Coroners Act for deaths in custody.
On December 27th, a 27-year-old woman died in a single-vehicle incident on the Alaska Highway. Investigators found the vehicle’s tire caught in the snow, leading to a roll. Road conditions were challenging and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
The Yukon Coroner’s Service is also assisting with a homicide investigation following a death on New Year’s Day.
“This has been a challenging and heartbreaking holiday season for the Yukon,” said Chief Coroner Heather Jones in a press release. “I urge all of us to show kindness and empathy, as there is a critical need for tenderness and understanding. May we find our way to compassion and support for those grieving these losses.”
