WHITEHORSE, YT – The Auditor General of Canada, Karen Hogan, alongside officials from the Federal Department of Finance are taking part in public hearings on the Yukon’s Public Accounts and Procurement & Contracting processes this week. Hogan and the Department officials will be appearing as witnesses during the hearings, and will offer commentary.
The accounts to be reviewed on Tuesday, January 14th, are the 2023–24 Consolidated Financial Statements of the Government of Yukon, released in October of 2023. It details the Yukon Government’s financial statements and spending information, and highlighted a non-consolidated deficit of more than $42 million dollars, an almost $91 million dollar swing from the original forecast of a $48 million dollar surplus.
A second hearing has been set for Thursday, January 16th, that will focus on a recent audit by the Auditor Generals Office of the Government’s Procurement and Contracting practices. The report to be reviewed took a close look at Government procedures to determine if a competitive procurement environment exists that results in value for money for contracts awarded, and found that a competitive environment for Yukon First Nations and local businesses did not exist, and many contracts awarded were not documented or monitored for results.
The hearings will be led by Yukon’s standing committee on public accounts.
