WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon has paused the January intake for the Yukon Nominee Program, as the Territory has only been approved for a total of 215 nominees this year – a reduction of 50% of last year’s numbers.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada had officially informed the Yukon Government of the allocation reduction on January 15th, with Premier Pillai confirming in a press release on Tuesday, January 21st, that the Department of Economic Development, which he oversees, had moved quickly to consult with industry organizations on how to proceed.
Premier Pillai says the pause has been put in place to ‘ensure this limited allocation is used strategically to address the Yukon’s pressing labour market needs.’
The Territory is also considering how to implement a new requirement from IRCC, stipulating that at least 75% of all nominations be from temporary residents already within Canada.
Additionally, as of January 22 at 4:30 pm, the Yukon Nominee Program will no longer accept applications from employers in rural communities.
