WHITEHORSE, YT -Whitehorse man, Kole Alexander Smeeton, has been sentenced to 1 year in jail and 2 years of subsequent probation upon release for the possession of child pornography.
Smeeton had been sentenced in a Whitehorse Court on January 8th. He had plead guilty to the charges in May of 2024.
The case dates back to October of 2021, when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children recieved a tip from Dropbox, a file sharing service, that a user by the name of Kole Smeeton had uploaded a pornographic video involving a prepubescent minor. The IP address of the upload had been traced by RCMP to a residence where Smeeton had been residing.
Following the execution of a search warrant in February of 2022, and the seizure of a number electronic devices, 350 pictures and videos depicting child pornography had been discovered on Smeeton’s laptop and mobile phone, involving children ranging from the ages of 1 to 17. 36 of the images and 6 videos depicted a youth engaged in sexual acts with him.
As part of his sentence, Smeeton has been ordered not to have contact with anyone under the age of 16 without supervision, cannot hold a position of trust over a minor, is barred from using social media, and online chatrooms, and will be registered as a sex offender for 20 years.
