Whitehorse, YT – The City of Whitehorse is proposing a 4.62 percent property tax increase to support the city’s growing infrastructure and services as part of the new municipal budget.
The 2025-2027 budget earmarks $119 million in spending for 2025.
The proposed property tax increase would add about $130 annually to the average household’s tax bill.
Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron highlighted that the proposed increase is necessary to ensure that the city can continue providing municipal services.
“There are increases to fees and charges for some municipal services, including public transit and parking, but these are necessary to keep up with the cost of delivering these services to a growing population,” said Mayor Cameron at a city council meeting on January 27th.
Key budget items include $400,000 for maintaining existing infrastructure, $307,000 for snow and ice control and $180,000 to continue funding the city’s FireSmart program.
The budget also includes investments in active transportation, such as plowing paved trails during the winter and increases for seniors’ utility rebates to help with rising costs.
Public input will be gathered during a meeting on February 10th, where residents are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposed budget.
