Whitehorse, YT – Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai says the 30-day pause on President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on Canadian goods is a positive step but warns that uncertainty remains for workers and businesses.
Pillai joined many Canadian premiers in pausing retaliatory measures and emphasized the need for stable and predictable trade relations with the U.S. which is essential for the Yukon’s economy.
He added that Canada must rethink its trade relationships, diversify markets and strengthen economic ties with friendly nations like Japan and South Korea.
“I think it’s a moment in time for Canadians to take that into consideration and understand that we’re going to have to have a different view as a country on how we strengthen our economic prowess,” said Pillai.
The Premier also called for continued progress in removing internal trade barriers across provinces and territories.
Pillai confirmed that the Yukon Government is reviewing its reliance on Starlink, a company owned by billionaire Elon Musk, for internet services and is working on a response plan in case the tariff situation escalates.
Yukoners are encouraged to support local businesses and prioritize Canadian-made products to strengthen the economy and reduce reliance on foreign goods.
