WHITEHORSE, YT – The City of Whitehorse has announced the passing of Director of Development Services, Mike Gau, a 25 year veteran of public service with the City.
Gau began working with the city as a summer student in the year 2000, progressing though a number of roles including time as a Planner, and Supervisor and Manager of Planning and Building Services, before taking over as Director of Development Services in 2012.
Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron has issued a statement on Gau’s passing, calling it a devastating loss for the community of Whitehorse. He praised Gau’s dedication to public service, and his warm and friendly demeanor.
“Mr. Gau’s loss is devastating for our organization and our community. He made a lasting impact on the City of Whitehorse and the people who work within it. On behalf of City Council and the City of Whitehorse, we offer our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time,” said Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron.
Mayor Cameron also called attention to Gau’s work in integrating sustainability and environmental practices into City operations, his key role in the development of four Official Community Plans, and his guidance of the City’s Planning, Land and Building, Economic Development and Transit Departments
Flags will be lowered to half mast at City facilities in honour of the late Mike Gau.
