WHITEHORSE, YT – The Yukon Government has announced the 2025 Rent Index will be set at 2%, in line with Whitehorse’s 2% Consumer Price Index in 2024.
Starting May 15th, Yukon Landlords can increase rents up to a maximum of 2%, but can not exceed this percentage, and the increase in not obligatory.
A full 3-months notice is required for rent increases.
Housing Agencies, including the Yukon Housing Corporation, Kwanlin Dün First Nation, and Grey Mountain Housing Society, are exempt from the requirements for all units with rents based on tenet or household income.
The implementation of Rent Caps based on Whitehorse’s CPI was included within the 2023 Confidence and Supply Agreement struck by the Yukon Liberal Party and the Yukon New Democratic Party.
Under these rules, if the Whitehorse CPI exceeds 5%, rent increases are capped at 5%, while if it falls below 2%, rents can still be increased up to 2%. Otherwise, it mirrors the Whitehorse CPI as calculated by Statistics Canada.
