WHITEHORSE, YT – When Federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, was in Whitehorse to announce funding for the Winter Crossing housing project in Whistle Bend, he also announced the roll out of a little more than $2.3 million over a 10 year period to support Public Transit in the City of Whitehorse, made available through the Canada Public Transit Fund’s Baseline Funding Stream.
‘As Housing Minister, you know so long as I’ve got this role, I’ll make sure we’re delivering as best we can for people in the Yukon on housing and on transit.’ – Federal Minister of Housing, Infrastructure and Communities, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith
The funding is meant to be predictable and long term, so the City of Whitehorse will have reliable access to the capital it needs to upgrade, replace, modernize and maintain it’s transit infrastructure. It’s part of a Federal Government effort to stimulate the growth of affordable transit-oriented communities by improving transit infrastructure nation-wide, with the added benefit of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The funding is set to being in 2026, and runs through to 2036.
