Whitehorse, YT – Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai says the Government is exploring options to limit support for businesses linked to Elon Musk as part of their broader response to the U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.
Many Yukoners have voiced concerns about services connected to Musk, including Starlink and X, both of which the Yukon government uses.
Pillai noted that while the government uses these platforms minimally, there is growing pressure to reconsider their use, especially as Ontario ripped up their $100 million Starlink contract.
“I don’t want to get ahead of myself,” Pillai said. “Our public servants are doing significant work in this area, and we will have more to say on that as we move into our Phase Two response in the days and weeks to come.”
The government is currently evaluating alternatives to these services, considering whether continuing their use would jeopardize the territory’s interests.
The first phase of the Yukon government’s response to the tariffs, including halting new orders for U.S. liquor and limiting U.S. business’ access to government procurement.
The government is also allocating $1 million in assistance for local businesses facing uncertainty due to the tariffs.
“This is a small territory, but what we’re doing is important. We’re showing solidarity to our fellow Canadians, while also supporting local workers, businesses and our way of life,” said Pillai. “Canada is not for sale, and we won’t back down.”
