WHITEHORSE, YT – Kate White, Leader of the Yukon NDP, had been targeted by an apparent act of politically motivated vandalism over the weekend.
According to White, as she was preparing for a meeting with the Association of Yukon Communities on the morning of Saturday, March 8th, she noticed three tires had been slashed on her truck and the words appearing to say “Resign, or Die’ spray painted on the hood.
“I think it’s supposed to say “Resign or Die’… there’s some spelling mistakes, but the messaging is pretty clear” – Kate White, Leader of the Yukon NDP, on the vandalism to her truck
White adds, this isn’t the first time her truck had been vandalized outside her own home.
“I think before we even talk about what happened on Friday night, we have to go back to December, just before Christmas, when two of my tires were slashed on my truck at my house… parked outside my house. At the time it felt very targeted, but I was unsure, so I didn’t talk about it… because it was pretty unsettling and fairly awful and I just didn’t want to talk about it. Well, I guess that person wanted to make sure that I knew it was about my job, and knew that they were unsatisfied.” – Kate White, Leader of the Yukon NDP, on being the victim of vandalism in the past
The MLA also has a message for whoever is responsible – she’s not afraid, and won’t be leaving politics.
“I’m not going to be threated by you, I’m not going to be intimidated by you, and you don’t scare me.” – Kate White’s message to whoever vandalized her truck
In the Yukon Legislative Assembly on Monday, March 10th, Premier Ranj Pillai introduced a motion condemning personal attacks, vandalism and threats of violence against elected officials. Yukon party Leader Currie Dixon also issued a statement condemning the vandalism against White, calling it a heinous act of politically motivated threats, and shared his hopes that those responsible be caught and brought to justice.
The Whitehorse RCMP have since confirmed that they are investigating a vandalism case in Takhini that took place over the weekend, which had been reported to them on the morning of March 8th, but could not confirm if it was the case involving White for privacy reasons.
An RCMP press release states they believe that the incident in question occurred after midnight, in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 8th.
The RCMP have asked anyone with information, or anyone with dashcam or home security footage from the area from 1130pm on March 7th, to 1am on March 8th to contact them.
