The Yukon Arts Centre unveiled its mobile stage on February 27. The stage will allow YAC to hold outdoor concerts in Whitehorse and the communities. It will also be available to rent by community groups. The purchase of the stage was made possible by Lotteries Yukon. Mike Thomas/Yukon Arts Centre.
Whitehorse, YT – Our Lady Peace, 54-40, and Shad are among the headliners in a new free concert series rolling out across the Yukon this summer for Lotteries Yukon’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
Sara Skelton, Chair of the Yukon Lotteries Commission, says they teamed up with the Yukon Arts Centre (YAC) to offer the shows at no cost.
“We wanted to make sure that we could do something, that people could bring their family, their friends, and celebrate our amazing, but very short summers, and do something that isn’t going to mean that they have trouble paying their bills that month,” said Skelton.
A new mobile stage, dubbed the “transformer stage” for its foldable, transportable design, will travel to communities across the territory, making it easier to host live events.
Michele Emslie, Programming Director at YAC, says the stage will be available for rent year-round, reducing the need for costly out-of-territory equipment.
“Not only will will provide a venue for these concerts this summer, but this is something that we can offer now to the communities around the Yukon in winter and summer,” said Emslie. “It’s going to be a real game changer.”
The summer concerts kick off with Our Lady Peace at Shipyards Park on June 28th, followed by Shad at the Dawson City Music Festival in July, and 54-40 on August 30th. The series will also feature family-friendly activities, including arts and crafts at Shipyards Park before the June 28th performance.
