Whitehorse, YT – Selkirk First Nation is raising concerns over a possible temporary closure of the Pelly Crossing Health Centre due to a shortage of nursing staff.
The Yukon Government has not confirmed a closure but says a service reduction is likely from April 30th to May 20th due to a shortage of nursing staff. A contingency plan includes stationing a paramedic in the community and hiring a part-time administrator to help direct residents to available support. Clinical services may still be unavailable during that time.
Selkirk First Nation says the territory failed to communicate clearly and did not consult them in advance.
Council says they only learned of the potential closure on April 11th and have since been pressing for solutions and support for those who rely on regular care. The Nation’s Wellness team is preparing to assist those with daily outpatient needs.
The territorial government says the doctor’s clinic scheduled for April 28th to 30th is still expected to go ahead.
The government is urging residents to refill prescriptions and make medical arrangements in advance.
