Whitehorse, YT – Five men have been charged with firearm offenses and kidnapping after a violent incident in the Kulan subdivision on April 14th.
Emergency calls to 911 led to a police response with six men arrested at the scene. One of the men was hospitalized for injuries sustained before police arrived.
A subsequent search of a property on April 16th uncovered a loaded semi-automatic assault rifle, a disassembled handgun and crack cocaine. Two victims, who were not residents of Yukon, were treated in the hospital and later returned to Vancouver.
The accused include 34-year-old Abdulahi Khader Sahal, 27-year-old Sumit Khumar Chandhar, 21-year-old Bret Darrell Demchuk and 49-year-old John Joseph Klemenz. A fifth man, also charged, passed away in an unrelated event after his release and his death is under investigation by the Yukon Coroner’s Service.
RCMP say the investigation is ongoing and further charges are expected. Chandhar and Klemenz were released on court orders while Demchuk and Sahal remain in custody.
