Whitehorse, YT – Two women were arrested following a four-hour standoff with police at the Blood Ties Four Directions Centre on Wednesday after reports of a firearm inside the building.
Whitehorse RCMP responded shortly after 7:00 p.m. to the 6th Avenue facility, where an adult female allegedly entered with a gun and pointed it at people inside. Staff quickly evacuated the building before police arrives and secured the area.
RCMP’s Critical Incident Program – including the Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team and Police Dog Services – was deployed to the scene.
Despite repeated attempts to make contact officers eventually confirmed that two individuals and a firearm inside.
Just before 11:00 p.m., officers entered the building and arrested 53-year-old Lisa Bunbury and 23-year-old Safyre Roberts with assistance from Police Dog Services. A replica firearm was recovered at the scene.
No shots were fired. Both women were medically assessed for minor injuries and taken to the Whitehorse Correctional Centre’s Arrest Processing Unit.
Bunbury and Roberts are charged with pointing a firearm, carrying an imitation firearm for the purpose of committing an offense and uttering threats.
The investigation remains ongoing.
