Whitehorse, YT – Canada Post workers are set to walk off the job Friday after the union representing 55,000 employees issued a 72-hour strike notice.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says the notice follows Canada Post’s indication it may unilaterally change working conditions and suspend benefits while the postal service argues the pause would worsen already dire economic conditions for the company.
A nationwide strike took place last November for 32 days after negotiations broke down. In Whitehorse, members of CUPW Local 852 took part.
A work stoppage would halt acceptance of new mail and parcels, with delivery suspended except for social assistance cheques and live animals already in the system.
Negotiations are ongoing ahead of the Friday deadline but both sides remain far apart.
