Whitehorse, YT – The Yukon Chamber of Commerce will vote next month on whether to dissolve after 40 years of operation citing financial pressures and an unsustainable business model.
According to an email bulletin shared with CKRW the motion will be presented at the organization’s annual general meeting on June 11. The bulletin states that the decision follows years of declining revenue and turnover in leadership.
“With great staff and Board turnover, the conclusion of a program contract, a pending recession, and more, it’s time for significant change,” reads the bulletin. “The current operational model is no longer sustainable, and difficult discussions need to be held.”
If the motion passes, an interim board will be appointed to manage the wind-down over the next three months, including settling accounts and determining what to do with any remaining funds.
If the motion fails, a new board will be elected and tasked with exploring alternative options, including a grassroots advocacy model or a complete reimagining of the organization.
Having a voice that serves the whole of the Yukon business community has been valued and essential for business and has been supported by the business community and government alike,” reads the bulletin. “Our deepest gratitude to every volunteer, association and government partner, working together for a stronger economy for Yukon.”
The Chamber is urging all members to attend the June 11th meeting and vote on the future of the organization.
