Whitehorse, YT – Work on the $183.9 million Nisutlin Bay Bridge replacement project has been paused on the north side of the new bridge after soil concerns were identified.
Minister of Highways and Public Works Nils Clarke said in a statement on Wednesday that the project’s engineer, WSP, flagged the issue on May 15th, prompting a halt in that area while geotechnical experts assess the soil conditions.
“It is still too early to confirm, timelines might be impacted,” said Minister Clarke in the statement. “Right now, we’re focused on keeping the project moving forward safely and efficiently.”
The existing Nisutlin Bay Bridge remains safe and operation and construction will continue in other unaffected areas.
Last year, Minister Clarke called the plans to replace the 70-year-old bridge the most significant infrastructure project undertaken in the territory.
