Whitehorse, YT – Crews continue to battle two out-of-control wildfires near Dawson City while roughly 200 homes remain under evacuation alerts.
The Quebec Creek fire has grown to over 3,200 hectares and remains roughly 10 kilometres from Upper West Dawson but has not crossed the highway. Crews are currently working on structure protection and reinforcements from Alberta are expected to arrive later tonight.
Meanwhile, the Mount Leotta fire has been mapped at over 5,900 hectares. The fire remains south of the highway will efforts focused on keeping it away from infrastructure near All Gold Creek.
Travel advisories remain in effect for the Top of the World and Dempster highways. 511 Yukon says road conditions can change rapidly.
Dawson remains on backup diesel power after the Stewart North line was de-energized. The airport is operational though visibility it limited due to smoke.
Wildfire smoke continues to blanket Dawson, prompting health advisories. The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Hall is open daily as a clean air shelter for residents needing respite or masks.
