Whitehorse, YT – Firefighters from across Canada and the U.S. are on the ground in Yukon as wildfire activity remains high, especially in the Dawson and Mayo regions.
More than 80 wildfires are burning in the territory. One of the most active blazes is the Francis Plateau fire, burning out of control near Ethel Lake.
The 7.5-square-kilometre fire showed low activity on Monday, but crews remain in the area. An evacuation alert has been lifted, though the Ethel Lake campground remains closed and the road is limited to local traffic.
Ten firefighters from Prince Edward Island arrived Monday, joining an 11-person crew from Oregon and other specialized teams from British Columbia, Alberta, New Brunswick and Yukon First Nations Wildfire. An eight-person incident management team from Oregon is also en route, along with helicopters, structure protection units and additional support staff.
A level two fire ban remains in effect for most of Yukon. Campfires are only allowed in approved fire pits at road-accessible campgrounds.
