Whitehorse, YT – Hot, dry weather continues to fuel wildfire activity in the Mayo area, where 30 fires are currently active — 18 out of control.
A new blaze, the Big Loop fire, started Saturday about 15 kilometres east of Mayo. Crews quickly responded with air support and ground teams, and the fire remains contained at 1.5 hectares with no threat to the community.
The North Ferry Hill fire, burning north of Stewart Crossing, remains a top priority. Now at 13,000 hectares, it’s considered out of control. Firefighters are working to protect homes and infrastructure along the Silver Trail and North Klondike Highways.
The Ladue Lake fire, about seven kilometres from Keno City, grew to 4,500 hectares and is also burning aggressively. Additional crews are on site, focusing on protection efforts in Keno and Hanson Lakes.
Evacuation alerts remain in place for Keno, McQuesten Lake and part of the Silver Trail Highway.
