Whitehorse, YT – Prescribed burning could start as early as this week behind the Mary Lake subdivision as fire crews target leftover wood mulch in the Whitehorse South Fuel Break.
The burn is part of Wildland Fire Management’s efforts to reduce wildfire risk around the city. Crews say smoke will likely be visible from many parts of Whitehorse, though they’ll try to limit its impact on nearby subdivisions and the Alaska Highway.
Firefighters will be stationed in the area and equipped to extinguish the burn if conditions change.
Trails south of Mary Lake will stay open during the burn, but officials are asking the public to follow firefighter instructions.
A recent survey found 76 per cent of Whitehorse residents support the use of prescribed fire.
