Whitehorse, YT – The Medicine Hat Tigers capped off a sweep of the Kelowna Rockets in Whitehorse this weekend, clinching the first-ever WHL Northern Lights Cup.
The Tigers closed the two-game WHL Showcase at Takhini Arena with a 5-2 win Saturday night backed by a pair of goals from forward Noah Davidson and a game-winner from rookie Gavin Kor. Medicine Hat also took Friday’s opener 8-4.
“I’ve never been anywhere close to up here, but it’s a great environment. It was a smaller rink. The fans are great, super loud,” said Kor in a post-game interview with the WHL. “So it was a great start to the season.”
Kor earned Player of the Game honours for Medicine Hat.
Notably absent from the Tigers’ roster was Whitehorse-born phenom Gavin McKenna, who recently committed to play in the NCAA for the Penn State Nittany Lions for the 2025-26 season
The series marked the WHL’s first-ever preseason stop in Yukon, with proceeds going to Sport Yukon’s Kids Recreation Fund, which helps families cover the cost of sports and recreation programs and equipment.
