Whitehorse, YT – Tributes are pouring in honouring Ione Christensen, a trailblazer in the territory’s politics, following her passing on Monday at 91.
Christensen, who moved to Whitehorse in 1949, was the first woman in the Yukon to serve as a justice of the peace and a juvenile court judge.
Whitehorse Mayor Kirk Cameron recalls the time Christensen beat out seven men in the 1975 mayoral race to become the capital’s first female mayor. In 1979, she was appointed Commissioner of Yukon.
Premier Mike Pemberton notes that she became the territory’s first female senator in 1999.
“Over her long life, Ione broke barriers in politics, law and public service. She opened doors, inspired countless Yukoners and showed the power of kindness, hard work and courage,” said Pemberton. “The Yukon is stronger because of her.”
Yukon Party Leader Currie Dixon called her a true Yukon political trailblazer whose lifetime of service will be missed.
Christensen is also remembered for preserving a sourdough starter that her great-grandfather brought north during the gold rush.
Flags at the Jim Smith Building and Taylor House will be flown at half-mast for seven days in her honour.
