Whitehorse, YT – Two Yukon unions are lining up behind rival parties ahead of the territorial election, which is now two weeks away.
The Yukon Employees’ Union has endorsed the NDP and leader Kate White, saying public workers have been hurt by job losses and the government’s reliance on private staffing agencies, which it says have cost more than $20 million since 2019.
Union President Justin Lemphers says the NDP understands the importance of a strong public service.
Meanwhile, the Whitehorse Firefighters Association is backing the Yukon Party, citing the party’s record of listening to firefighters and supporting safety initiatives, including plans for a fully staffed fire hall in Whitehorse’s Whistle Bend neighborhood.
The association says leader Currie Dixon has shown respect for the union and a commitment to public safety.
Yukoners head to the polls on Nov. 3.
