Whitehorse, YT – A magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook parts of western Yukon on Saturday afternoon.
Earthquakes Canada says the quake hit around 1:41 p.m. Yukon time, about 248 kilometres west of Whitehorse and 91 kilometres north-northwest of Yakutat, Alaska. There were reports of items falling off walls and shelves.
Numerous aftershocks occurred that reached as high as magnitude 5.7 at 5:50 p.m. Yukon time on Sunday.
The quake occurred along the Pacific-North America plate boundary near the Fairweather Fault, a region known for significant seismic activity, including multiple major earthquakes since the 1950s.
