Whitehorse, YT – The new year brought changes to how often some commercial vehicles need to be inspected.
As of Jan. 1, trucks and tractors weighing more than 11,794 kilograms that operate only within the territory will move from inspections every six months to once a year.
The Yukon Government says in a statement that the change aligns the territory with the National Safety Code and other Canadian jurisdictions. The aim of extending the inspection times is to cut costs for businesses and improve efficiency for commercial carriers operating in the territory.
Commercial vehicles that travel outside the Yukon will still need to meet inspection requirements in the jurisdictions where they operate.
According to a press release, licensed inspection facilities carry out roughly 2,800 commercial vehicle inspections each year.
